The Mary Sue is searching for an online culture writer to join our team! We’re looking for a journalist who gets our intersectional feminist perspective and has significant knowledge of, and passion for, geek culture, internet culture, streamers, YouTubers, webseries, social media platforms, The Discourse™, fandom, weird internet memes, politics, and more! You should especially be plugged into the 24/7 news cycle. Do you have fifteen notifications pop onto your phone from a variety of sources whenever something happens in your favorite fandom? We want to hear from you!

We cover a wide variety of subjects, with approaches varying from news and opinion articles to evergreen lists and more. You'll be tasked with building our online culture section, pitching stories on everything from review bombing on Steam to public figures' controversial social media posts. These are just a few examples of the range of stories that fall under this umbrella:

What are we looking for in a prospective freelance writer?

  • The ability to write quickly and accurately
  • SEO experience
  • Someone eager to learn and incorporate feedback to build their writing skills
  • Familiarity with WordPress/blogging platforms
  • Availability during our business hours of 9–6PM Eastern
